weird security on campus

I’d like to tell you about the security in the UK in this blog. For me the whole stuff is a little bit surprising, because I don’t know that from germany. But it seems like some students really need these advises I write about:

The village office of Strathclyde University seems to be very concerned about the students security. There was a “welcome meeting” where we were  told how to behave in our flats to be secure regarding the fire and the personal security.

Just watch the videos (sorry, I had to split them, since youtube did not allow me to upload it as one video) – espacially from minute 10 of the first video:

There were also some fire fighters in our flat to explain how the smoke and fire detectors work. It is great to know, that there is somebody worrying about our safety, but sometime it is too much.

Next goodie ist the weekly fire alarm test. We have 3 tests in our lectures in each week. And additionally on wednesday morning, the only day I can stay in bed longer in the week, they test the alarm in our flat. Great job!

Downloading Springer books easier

I am very glad to have free access to a lot of great books at springerlink.com, and to be able to download them as PDF. But the bad thing about it is that you get every chapter of a book as a single pdf file.

One day I had the idea to make a shell-skript that gets all these files for me and merges them to a single file. But first step was to check google if there was no such skript. Fortunately there already has been a piece of great software that was better then I expected.
This skript is written in python and is named springer_download.py from Milian

After some month I wanted a couple of new books for the new semester. And there was also a new version of the software that was now also able to take the ISBN of the books. Unfortunately I had a lot of books to download. I was lucky again: a friendly guy from my university gave me a skript that calls springer_download.py in batch to download multiple books without taking care about it too much.

But to use this batch download more efficiently I wanted to have a small greasemonkey plugin. There was nothing like that before, so I programmed it the last days. It adds some links to springerlink.com book pages that allow you to make a list of ISBN numbers. These numbers can be copied to the file batchlist.txt that is needed for the batchdownload.

I will add some features sometimes, but that should be ok for the moment. Feel free to change it and to say something about it.

settling down in student accommodation

After some sightseeing in Glasgow we got our rooms on campus on saturday, September 18th. There was no way for us to get it earlier, but if you contact the student accommodation team early it’s possible to get the rooms before that date.

As i read on facebook before the accommodation I am in (called Birkbeck Court), was considered to be the worst one on campus. It’s also the biggest and oldest one. Because it is situated between Glasgow city centre and the other campus-buildings everyone passes it when coming back from parties – so you shouldn’t be the first who wants to sleep 😉

traveling to Glasgow

We were travelling to glasgow in 3 steps. The first step was to fly to London-Standstead with Ryanair. Then we went to London, Victoria Station, where our bus to Glasgow started.

Everything was fine about the flight. Afterwards we took an Airportbus from London-Stanstead to Victoria Station. After more than one hour we arrived somewhere around the bus station. There we had to wait for about 2 hours for the bus to Glasgow. The part to get to London was ok, but the further way wasn’t.
When the Glasgow-Bus started in London there was no air-condition but the bus was completely full of people. So we couldn’t sleep there. After a short stop somewhere on our way the air condition was turned on. Since then it was freezing cold inside the bus. These busses are cheap, but it’s very uncomfortable. The name of the bus-company is Megabus. Someone told us that it’s one of the cheapest in britain.

Arrived in Glasgow we had a lot of time to walk to our hotel and to get well again. So we went to a small restaurant to get breakfast. It was really britisch with bacon, eggs and toast, so quite hard for me as I am used to eat sweet for breakfast.

If you plan to do the same journey, consider taking another plane from London to Glasgow. It’s much more comfortable and not that much more expensive.

Mobook update

Nachdem ich grad hier gesehen habe, dass die ersten per Google-Suche nach Mobook hier hergekommen sind, möchte ich doch mal ein update dazu schreiben.

Generell haben wir keinerlei Einschränkungen festgestellt. Sämtliche Kommunikation klappte bisher. ICQ, Jabber, Google-Talk. Morgen ist ein Voicechat test per Google-Talk dran.

Zu SIP kann ich leider nichts sagen. Wir haben keinen SIP-Client installiert. Ich erwarte allerdings, dass es wie bei vielen anderen UMTS Tarifen gesperrt sein wird. Hat dazu jemand Erfahrungen?

Problematisch ist allerdings nur das Wetter. Sobald Wolken aufziehen, ist die Geschwindigkeit begrenzt. Sobald dann auch noch Regen dazu kommt, wird mit GPRS weitergesurft. Die Netzabdeckung im Haupteinsatzgebiet wird von Vodafone allerdings als bestens angezeigt.

Über Feedback würd ich mich sehr freuen. Kann jemand die Wettereinflüsse bestätigen, oder ist das nur ein lokaler Effekt?

Goodbye Leipzig – Auf nach Glasgow

Am Dienstag (31.08.) war es nun so weit. Ich war das vorerst letzte Mal in Leipzig. Die Wohnung ist nun übergeben.

Irgendwie freue ich mich zwar, endlich alles geschafft zu haben, doch es bleibt ein trauriges Gefühl übrig. Die bisherige Zeit in Leipzig war richtig schön und ich werde wohl so schnell nicht wieder den Luxus einer so tollen Wohnung haben. Zwar war das Haus in der Wächterstraße nicht das ansehnlichste, aber wir hatten uns sehr viel Mühe gegeben die Platte wohnlich zu machen. Viele kleine Details, die auch nach wie vor noch in der Wohnung sind, werde ich vermissen und sicher noch in ein paar Jahren daran denken. Außerdem war der Platz richtig genial. Da werde ich mich die nächsten Jahre in Wohnheimen und WG-Zimmern etwas einschränken müssen…

Auf mich warten nun noch 2 Wochen Vorbereitung und dann gehts endlich nach Glasgow. Vom 15. bis 18. hab ich mich mit ein paar Kommilitonen erstmal in einem Etap Hotel einquartiert. Danach können wir ins Wohnheim. Mal sehen, wann ich mit den ersten Bildern von dort berichten kann. Ich werde zu diesen Themen ab dem nächsten Eintrag in englisch schreiben, da die Texte sicher auch andere internationale Austauschstudenten interessieren werden.

ICQ über Telekom Netz nicht erreichbar

Da ich das ganze Wochenende unterwegs war, und vor allem nicht über einen Telekomzugang im Netz war, hab ich es erst heute mitbekommen. ICQ ist aus Telekomnetzen derzeit nicht erreichbar. Laut Heise Online sollen wohl Routingprobleme schuld sein.
Irgendwie ist das grad nervig… ich bin schon seit langem über Jabber erreichbar, aber einige Unbelehrbare sind nicht von ICQ abzubringen… ist ja alles so schön bunt und einfach. Und es benutzen ja eh die meisten. :-/

Ich hoffe, dass sowas endlich mal ein paar Leute zum Umdenken bringt.

Hochwasser in Chemnitz

Am Samstag früh war ich zum Frühstück im Chemnitzer Zentrum eingeladen. Auf dem Weg dorthin wurde es mir teilweise etwas mulmig. Schon in Reichenhain, wo ich startete, musste ich durch eine ca. 15cm tiefe “Pfütze” auf der Straße, die sich aber über ettliche Meter Länge erstreckte.
Als ich dann aber an der Chemnitz vorbeikam, war das schon ein ganz anderer Eindruck: dort stand eine komplette Kreuzung nebst 200-300m Straße so tief unter Wasser, dass die Wasserwacht mit Booten anrückte.

Am Nachmittag dann habe ich dieses kleine Filmchen von der Chemnitz gedreht:

Hier stand das Wasser so hoch, dass nur noch wenige Zentimeter unter der Brücke Luft blieben.

Am Sonntag dann war ich mit meiner Freundin mal wieder auf Geocaching-Tour. Hier bot sich selbst am eigentlich kleinen Kappelbach ein Bild, dass an das sog. “Jahrhunderthochwasser” von 2002 erinnerte. An der Zwickauer Straße musste das Wasser am Vortag auch über die Ufer getreten sein, was sich mit diesem Video bestätigte.

Wenn man bei Youtube noch ein wenig weiter sucht, zeigt sich, dass das Ausmaß weit schlimmer war, als ich gedacht hätte. Aber zum Glück ist ein Großteil schon wieder abgelaufen. So konnte man Sonntag nachmittag/abend schon wieder fast alle Chemnitzer Flutgebiete ungehindert passieren.

Surfstick

Da meine Freundin ein Studium weit ab der Heimat beginnt und im Wohnheim kein Internet verfügbar ist, musste ein Surfstick her. Da sie mindestens 3 Jahre immer mal woanders sein wird, durfte es auch ein 24monats-Vertrag sein.
Aufgrund der fehlenden Netzabdeckung von E-Plus in der primären Zielregion, musste ich alle Angebote ausschließen, die das E-Plus Netz verwenden.
Übrig geblieben sind Verträge von Vodafone und moobook.
Unsere Entscheidung ist aufgrund des Preises dann auf letzteres gefallen, denn es gab ein Angebot: die übliche Flat (5GB) für knapp 15 Euro und den Surfstick kostenlos dazu.

Sobald die ersten Erfahrungen damit gemacht sind, werde ich wieder dazu schreiben

Erster Eintrag

nachdem meine Webseite c-aurich.de nun schon Ewigkeiten brach lag, habe ich mich dazu entschlossen ihr wieder ein wenig Leben einzuhauchen. Einen Anlass dazu gibt es natürlich auch: rund um das Auslandsstudium, das ich in Glasgow angehen werde, wird es genug zu schreiben geben. Es geht zwar erst am 14.09. los, aber es gibt jetzt schon ein paar Sachen, über die ich schreiben könnte/werde.

Da es zur Zeit noch ziemlich viel zu tun gibt, muss ich erstmal sehen, wann ich dazu komme zu bloggen.
